¿Tienes varices? Así puede ayudarte el calzado barefoot a mejorar tu circulación

Do you have varicose veins? Here's how barefoot shoes can help improve your circulation.

Did you know we have a “second heart” in our legs? The calf muscles play a key role in venous return, helping to pump blood back to the heart as we walk. Every time we walk, the calf muscles contract and compress the veins, pushing blood upward. This natural mechanism works like a pump that counteracts gravity. But for it to work efficiently, we need our feet to move naturally—something only barefoot walking or barefoot footwear can provide.

What’s the connection between varicose veins and movement?

Varicose veins are dilated veins that appear mainly in the legs due to poor venous circulation. This happens when the vein valves don’t work properly and blood fails to return efficiently to the heart, pooling in the lower limbs.

Factors such as wearing conventional footwear, standing or sitting for long periods, sedentary lifestyle, or weak muscles can worsen this condition. That’s why moving regularly and strengthening the legs is essential to prevent varicose veins.

How does barefoot footwear help?

Barefoot shoes strengthen feet and ankles, increase joint range, and promote natural gait, allowing natural circulation. Unlike conventional shoes that often elevate the heel and restrict mobility, barefoot footwear:

  • Activates foot and leg muscles, including calves and soleus.
  • Improves natural gait, encouraging a smoother walking pattern.
  • Increases ankle joint range, essential for effective blood pumping.
  • Promotes better posture by avoiding heel elevation that alters body alignment.

All this contributes to better venous circulation, helping to improve and prevent varicose veins and relieve tired legs.

Simple exercises to activate your “second heart”

Alongside walking in barefoot shoes, you can add these daily movements:

  • Walk at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Tiptoes & slow descent: stand up, rise onto your toes and lower slowly. (50–60 reps/day)
  • Ankle flexion and extension: seated or lying down, move your feet like pedaling. (20–30 reps/day)
  • Foot circles: lying down, lift one leg and draw circles with your foot. (20–30 reps/day)

This is about more than just aesthetics. Varicose veins can cause pain, heaviness, and in advanced stages, lead to chronic venous insufficiency. Caring for your legs is key to preventing long-term complications.

At Libertas Barefoot, we design minimalist footwear that combines beauty, ergonomics, and freedom. Our philosophy is rooted in body connection and natural health, and that’s why we believe every step can be a form of self-care.
