Although often overlooked, the feet—especially the big toe—have a dedicated representation in the cerebral cortex. This specific neural connection is essential to something as uniquely human as walking upright.
Our feet are not just a base that supports us: they are a true sensory network. They’re packed with nerve endings—even more than the hands. These tiny receptors gather information from the environment and send it to the brain in real time, helping us maintain balance, react, and move smoothly.
Of all the toes, the big toe plays a key role in balance and body propulsion. Its weakness or stiffness can alter our walking pattern, affect the arch, and lead to muscular and postural problems. That’s why strengthening and restoring its mobility has a major impact on the entire body.
But there’s one fundamental principle worth remembering: if you don’t move your toes properly, they weaken. According to the principle of neural plasticity, if we neglect the natural function of the foot, this essential connection with the brain weakens over time—but the good news is that it can be recovered!
When we wear conventional shoes—narrow, rigid, elevated—our sensors go dormant. The foot stops sensing and sending information, and the brain receives fewer and fewer signals from that area. However, when we walk barefoot, a chain reaction occurs: muscles wake up, joints move more freely, the brain receives a flood of sensory input in real time, and all of this activity positively feeds back into the nervous system.
Walking barefoot improves coordination, balance, and body awareness. But that’s not all: it activates muscles, lubricates joints, and revitalizes the nervous system. It all starts with the feet, but the effects are felt throughout the body.
That said, we can’t always go barefoot. That’s why barefoot or minimalist footwear exists: designed to let the foot move, feel, and function as it should—without interference or restriction. It’s the best way to reconnect with our nature, without giving up protection.
